I drove to Lookout Point in northern North Dakota, a place where the land rolls into rare hills among the wide plains. My hope was to catch the sunset, but as I arrived, a storm front began to rise on the horizon. The sky darkened, and I thought the evening would end in flat light, erasing the scene I had imagined. Then, just as the sun dropped low, it broke through beneath the clouds and lit the storm clouds in blazing gold. The hills glowed, the lone tree stood against the vast sky, and for a brief instant everything aligned. I pressed the shutter and captured the balance of storm and light in a way I had only hoped for.
